SpeedShare Client User Guide

Introduction

SpeedShare is an application that lets you browse, move and copy files over the Internet. It works like the Finder, so that it's easy to organize files and folders, get info on them, and copy them to or from any Macintosh on a standard dial-up Internet connection. Files are transferred in the background, with built-in file compression.

SpeedShare is used to connect to other Macs running another application called SpeedShare Server. This program makes a Mac's files available to SpeedShare over TCP/IP, the network protocol of the Internet.

SpeedShare works like the Finder, making it easy to organize files and folders, get info on them, and copy them.

This is a how-to guide to using SpeedShare. Because SpeedShare works very much like the Finder, you may find that the simplest way to learn about SpeedShare is to just open it and start to use it.

Getting Started

The hardest part of using SpeedShare is setting up a connection.

These are the things that are needed to connect to a SpeedShare Server: To initiate a connection to a SpeedShare Server, make sure that you're connected to the Internet. Then double-click the SpeedShare icon.

Normally, you will connect to the SpeedShare server using the Qdea Worldwide Rendezvous. The Rendezvous makes connections between servers and clients by name. It's easier to use the Rendezvous - all you need to know is the name of the server.

If you want to connect using a fixed TCP/IP address, click TCP/IP Address and enter the address. TCP/IP addresses look like this: 56.129.247.86, where each number is between 0 and 255. The TCP/IP address of a SpeedShare Server is entered in the Log of the server each time it starts up.

As the connection is being made, a Connection window appears:

The Connection window shows the contents of the disks on the Mac you've connected to.
